1. What’s Your Day-to-Day Styling Ritual Look Like?
It’s essential to get a feel for your natural desire for how you’d like to style your hair. In theory, you may love the idea of a super adorable bang and platinum hair, but the amount of maintenance to maintain a healthy head of hair for those styles might not be feasible or realistic for you.
2. Are You Looking for Something Lax, or Are You Really Into a Routine?
Some people love a get-ready-morning-ritual where they style their hair.
Other people can’t stand it and want their hair to be lookin’ good with little-to-no maintenance.
3. Do You Use Heat on Your Hair?
It's always an important question. Also, what other tools and products are you using? If you consistently use a straightener or a curler, you’ll want to watch for damaged hair.
4. What’s Been Done to Your Hair in the Past That You Don’t Want to Repeat?
This might seem intrusive, but it’s a fundamental question. People are all very different—something that we as stylists might think might be a positive experience for you might be something you already know you hate.
Maybe we (as stylists) think that you (the client) would look great with a stylish bob—but if you’ve had a horrendous experience with a bob-length cut that you never want to repeat, you’ll likely not be on board with your bob suggestion.
5. What’s Been One of Your Favorite Hair Stylist Experiences and Why?
Understanding what you love about your past hair experiences is just as helpful.
6. What Are Your Long-Term Hair Goals?
Whether they know this or not, it’s always important to ask. If you want to let your hair grow to be solid and beautiful, chopping it into a pixie cut isn’t the priority.
Be sure you are open with them about what they want, and ensure that this is a non-judgmental space for you to share your thoughts and ideas with us.
7. Do you Spend a Ton of Time Outside?
The elements can be damaging, and if you spend a ton of time outside, we need to know about it to help you strategize ways to keep your hair healthy. Further, we can brainstorm ideal cuts and styles for you to keep your hair beautiful while protecting it from further damage.
8. What’s Your Favorite Thing About Your Hair?
This is a great question—make sure you talk yourself up here. Even if your hair has some issues, there’s undoubtedly something significant about it (the color, the length, the texture, etc.)—and make sure you’re telling us what you love so that we don’t accidentally change something you’re fond of.
9. How Would You Like to Improve Your Hair?
It’s okay to talk about the less-than-favorite features of your hair. Yes, sometimes we have to be honest and direct (you need to know if you’re doing something that’s damaging your hair); this is a safe space for you to feel comfortable enough to discuss these insecurities with us.
10. What’s Something You Love to Do But Know It’s Damaging Your Hair?
Whether you love to swim laps in a chlorine pool or need to temp-dye your hair with boxed color, you must be honest about some of the things you love to do that could also damage your hair. We’re not saying you should stop doing what you love, but knowing about your passions and hobbies can help us figure out an ideal regimen for your hair care that’ll keep your strands sexy and your locks luscious.
Help this help prepare you for your next appointment!
